FAQ

Common Questions

Do I have to pay tax on my cryptocurrency in the UK?

Yes. HMRC treats cryptoassets like Bitcoin and Ethereum as property. You're liable for Capital Gains Tax when you sell, trade, gift, or dispose of crypto. You may also owe Income Tax if earning crypto through mining, staking, or as payment.

When do I pay Capital Gains Tax on crypto?

You pay CGT when you: sell crypto for fiat (GBP), exchange one crypto for another, use crypto to buy goods/services, or gift crypto (except to spouse). You're taxed on the profit, not the total value.

How much Capital Gains Tax will I owe?

For 2024/25: £3,000 tax-free allowance. Gains above this are taxed at 18% (basic rate) or 24% (higher rate) for disposals after October 30, 2024. Earlier disposals taxed at 10% or 20%.

Will HMRC know about my crypto holdings?

Likely. HMRC has data-sharing agreements with UK and international exchanges. They've sent letters to suspected underreporters. It's best to stay compliant and report accurately.
